An installation about intimate moments, cracks in policies and regulators and the repetitive operation of repaired systems to the point of oblivion.

Installation, water, ceramics, metal, pump

Privacy is a construct. Its “invention” is closely linked to the establishment of the bourgeoisie as a new power and the French Revolution as a cradle of European democratisation. Since the reorganisation of living space at that time, a woman’s toilette has been an intimate moment in the daily routine. The installation Artikel Zwölf (Article Twelve) makes public this personal, hidden ritual. The private is not simply the opposite of public, but rather in itself political.

Article 12* of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights refers to the protection of personal space and privacy. The basin in the Artikel Zwölf installation contains cracks that are clearly visible in the classic cobalt blue of an elegant bathroom suite. The water in the basin is flowing non-stop, the abundance of our everyday luxury uninterrupted.
