Doris Kuwert
After secondary school in Mannheim, she studied maths and physics at the University of Heidelberg, where she was involved in the early days of CERN as a professor's assistant. She moves to Berlin and works for 7 years for the WRB, Wischenshaftlichen Rechenzentrum, where she writes and develops software for the Berlin universities.
Meanwhile, she slowly became interested in contemporary music and the art scene of the 80s and 90s. A trip through the USA, where there are no permanent jobs, and visits to art exhibitions such as the Documenta make her switch to a different, more creative way of earning a living.
She applied to art academies in Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, but eventually ended up in Amsterdam, where she studied at the Rietveld Academy. She then moved back to Berlin to study at the UDK, the University of the Arts, and took part in Goldrausch, a programme for professional women artists.
Based on an ongoing interest in science and technology, she likes to play with their means and builds constructions with electronic and mechanical combinations in kinetic installations with animated everyday objects. The pre-programmed choreographies make room for unexpected actions and reactions and create a platform for marvellous accidents and magical coincidences. The viewer's imagination discovers its own associations with our political communities of the past and the future.
