In *Field*, there is a shift away from the autonomous subject toward hybrid collectives that exist in symbiotic interaction with their ecosystems. Hei Yuen Man’s audiovisual installation uses the rhizome-like branching logic of mycelial networks as a paradigm for decentralized, ecological intelligence. The sculptural work simulates the flow of signals in a hybrid network and translates the invisible underground structure of the sprawling mycelium—which connects plants and exchanges resources—into an immediate sensory experience for exhibition visitors.

*Field* is a spatial sound installation consisting of sculptural nodes. Proximity sensors detect the presence of visitors, thereby generating subtle changes in the sounds associated with nearby nodes. From any given position, sounds from different parts of the space can be heard simultaneously, while each movement alters only a small part of the composition. Visitors can approach a node, linger there, or move away again, while the sounds in other areas continue independently. The impact of a single movement remains minimal within the larger soundscape and may overlap with changes caused by other bodies. The work never returns to exactly the same state.

Field draws on the growth of mycelium. A mycelial network expands through branching hyphae whose tips react to conditions in their immediate surroundings. Different parts of the network can simultaneously explore, absorb, connect, or change direction. Local reactions become part of a larger structure that continues to develop elsewhere. This organization shapes the work’s acoustic system. Each node reacts only to movements in its immediate vicinity, while every change feeds into an already existing field of activity. Field views the mycelium as a living structure that emerges through simultaneous, uneven, and constantly changing encounters.
