Atuel
Interactive documentary film by the Matajuegos [Game Killer] cooperative about the Argentinian river Atuel.
The Atuel River flows through the south of the province of Mendoza into the Pampa. It got its name from the Puelche community and means "soul of the earth". For the indigenous peoples and for all those who live nearby, the river is much more than just a river, much more than just a watercourse. For many, it stands for identity, community and life. And Atuel, the video game, tries to convey this through an interactive experience.
Atuel takes players from the source along the course of the river through landscapes that combine the flora and fauna of the region with surreal graphics in rich colours and impressive contrasts. Along the journey, players learn stories about the Atuel, its importance to local residents and its geological and geographical significance. There is also basic information about rivers in general, their relationship to cities and communities, the importance of wetlands and much more.
Atuel invites players to experience the river's journey in an innovative way. At the beginning, they are the river Atuel itself, but then they witness its evolution by being put in the shoes of the different animals that inhabit its environment. The first-person journey allows for a much stronger connection to what is to be seen and heard, something that an ordinary documentary film cannot achieve in the same way.
The game can be downloaded for free from Matajuegos' page on Itch.io, a platform for publishing independent video games and other artistic projects.
