Embedded (Digital Limbo) creates an interactive video environment using the surveillance cameras in the esc medien kunst labor.

Svitlana Zhytnia, artist name Zhi Zhi, is a new media artist specializing in digital visual art. Zhi Zih works solo and with sound artists to create live audio-visual performances and interactive visuals for theater performances and installations. (In 2022, she will launch the duo project Zhi Zhi Ni Ni with Graz-based composer Nick Acorne, in which she will create interactive music and live visuals for stage use). As with her multimedia performance To the Dead, the Living, and to Those Yet Unborn, realized in 2022 as part of the Mapping Festival in Geneva (together with the musician Joëlle Kehrli), with Embedded (Digital Limbo) she combines a video work with the conditions of the presentation location - in this case the video surveillance at esc medien kunst labor.

The central motif of the urban environment also returns: in a kind of abstract (digital or Morse code-like) minimalism - focused on point, line, point - simple geometric shapes visually transform the space and fill it with rhythm: Embedded (Digital Limbo) presents a graphically deconstructed urban landscape in this way, a fragmented scenery that is in constant motion. A virtual camera follows the same path endlessly, but the environment is constantly reshaping itself, fragmenting and reassembling itself in new configurations. In this unstable space, viewers can occasionally catch a glimpse of themselves - reflected, embedded or distorted on moving planes that merge with the changing surfaces and faces of the digital forms.

“This cold, dystopian environment,” says Svitlana Zhytnia, "evokes a feeling of artificial imprisonment and acts like a digital cage. It captures the figures captured by the camera and keeps them trapped in a kind of digital limbo - out of place, depersonalized and in a system that never rests, endlessly in circulation."

In Geneva, the urban environment was still associated with a prayer for “the people whose lives were taken by barbaric power”; in Graz, Zhi Zhi intones the prayer in a new way.
