Multidisciplinary artists and practitioners from various fields work together on creating new artworks that encourage the imagining of potential key elements in artistic collaboration.
In a series of working sessions and exhibitions in Barcelona, Brussels, Sicily and Graz, ITERATIONEN establishes the framework in which artists can experiment collectively with new methods of artistic work. This results in new forms of collectivity and collaboration. The project is structured around the conceptual model of iteration. Inspired by recursive forms of collaboration, such as those that exist in open source software development, the ITERATIONEN series applies the concepts of repetition and circularity to artistic strategies in which the output of one activity is used as the input for the next activity. There exists in the digital arts a growing movement in favour of open codes, for sharing and for networked production. ITERATIONEN translates open source methods drawn from the digital field into analogue art practices, artistic knowledge exchange and exhibition design.
The ITERATIONEN series explores processes and motivations that invite artists to try out models of collaboration and digital tools. The fields associated with art are expanded. Aesthetic, ethical and legal issues arising from multiple authorship are negotiated. Following the open source philosophy, the project establishes collective procedures for all processes.
