In FLOWING TWO geht die Video- und Filmemacherin Els van Riel weiter den Grundelementen des Kinos auf den Grund – Zeit und Licht – und entwickelt unter Auslassung jeglichen Symbolismus oder einer Form des Narrativen eine Art von neuer Ästhetik. Für Els van Riel ist der Projektor eine zentrale Figur in der cinematographischen Umsetzung ihrer Installationen. Die mechanische Bildquelle wird präsent, als wäre sie ein Lebewesen.

Els van Riel lebt und arbeitet in Brüssel; sie studierte Fotografie und Cinematografie, arbeitet als Fotografin, Herausgeberin und Produzentin für Foto-, Film-, Video- und Theaterproduktionen. Ihre Filme, Videos und Installationen erforschen die Auswirkungen kleiner Veränderungen in einem Moment, einer Bewegung, Material, Licht und Wahrnehmung. Els van Riel beschäftigt sich in dieser Arbeit mit Fragen der Übertragung, Übersetzung, vermeintlicher Kommunikation.

"I was invited to join the creative discourse of this Time Inventor’s Kabinet. Windclocks set up in different places over Europe detect and measure the wind. These different wind speed data enter my computer as numbers. By the use of 4 ventilators, I turn them back into one common wind. To make this wind visible I connected the ventilators to a projection screen made out of a cord curtain. Then I filmed these moving cords in different ways, developed the film both into positive and negative and project these moving images onto the very same moving cords again.
This combination of the screen as a moving object with its moving image projected on top of it, transfers the result into an ever changing visual pattern of greys, blacks and whites. I like to see this work as a study on the actual relationship between chemical and mechanical film and the potential physical matter of time. I attempt to use the matter of film as a container for slices of abstract time itself. As if this were possible."
